Description of organisation

Bergamo is a quite compact city with a population of around 120.000 inhabitants, and with a population of 350.000 inhabitants in its whole urban area. Located in the Lombardy plain, only 30 minutes by car from Milan, Bergamo is part of the metropolitan Milan area and features one of the best infrastructural system in Europe (financial, logistic, technological, health). Bergamo has some points of interest that attract many commuters from the province or from neighboring cities like the University, with more than 20.500 students and several international research projects, the new Hospital and the science and technology park, “KilometroRosso”, that is one of the top 10 places of excellence for innovation in Italy.

Municipalities represent the basic local authorities’ level in the Italian system. The Italian Constitution attributes to them administrative functions, according to the principle stating that the management of public functions should be attributed to the entities which are the nearest to the citizens and therefore in the best position to grant them the most efficient services.

For this reason the Municipality of Bergamo is the public local entity mostly dedicated to the interests of Bergamo citizens and to respond to the different needs of its formal and non-formal groups. The different Municipality’s office are involved in this principal areas: social services, culture, education, citizen administrative service, urban planning, mobility, environmental services, youth policy and so on.
