Valmieras Gaujas krasta secondary school - development centre is a general special education institution which implements special education programmes in pre-primary school, primary school and secondary school.
The school objectives are:
* developing an appropriate educational environment for students with special needs;
* organise and implement the process of education and upbringing, taking into account the health status, skills and development of students, in order to ensure the achievement of the objectives in the national standard for pre-primary education, primary education and general secondary education;
* preparing students for their own life in society, including integration into the labour market;
* promoting the inclusion of students with special needs in educational institutions and society, providing systemic advisory and methodical support for students from other educational institutions, their parents or legal representatives, specialists and educational institutions in the field of special and inclusive education.

The main direction of Valmieras Gaujas krasta secondary school - development centre is educational action, rehabilitation, integration and promotion of the inclusion process.
The vision of the institution: "Our school will be an European and global high-level support, counselling and educational centre in Latvia for children and young people with hearing disorders and in the region of Vidzeme for children with mental development and other disorders. The graduates of our school will be students in universities or qualified and skilled specialists, or a person, who is an active part of positive action directed society."
The school has set long-term aims in following directions:
*the access of education for wide range of interested people with special education needs especially for students with hearing disorders and mental development disorders;
*the motivation of teachers to introduce innovations;
*the introduction of new, modern education programmes in accord with requirements of labour market;
* the quality monitoring of all aspects which are related to school work.

The school has accumulated more than 140 years of experience in educational work with students with hearing disorders; in the last 8 years the school also works with students with mental development disorders.
In pre-primary school Valmieras Gaujas krasta secondary school - development centre offer nine special education programmes for children with:
*visual disorders;
*hearing disorders;
*physical disorders;
*somatic disease;
*language disorders;
*mixed disorders;
*mild mental disorders;
*severe mental development disorders or multiple severe development disorders.
In primary school there are three special education programmes for students with:
*hearing disorders;
*mild mental disorders;
*severe mental development disorders or multiple severe development disorders.
In secondary school there is one special education programme for students with hearing disorders.

Outside the learning process students have an opportunity to take a part in the education of interests, students can go to the school library, where have been organised different kind of events, exhibitions. The school implements diversified interest education programmes for all students in accord with sttudents` and their parents` interests and the provision of teachers. Students can take a part in melodeclamation, woodworking, basketball, street gymnastics, chess and checker club, vocal instrumental group, etc.
As a unit of Valmieras Gaujas krasta secondary school - development centre there is a development centre which implements the support function of special and inclusive education. The aim of the development centre is to promote students with special needs inclusion in education institutions and society by giving systemic and descendent, consultative and methodological support for students, their parents, specialists and education institutions, the main field is special education and inclusive education.
