description of organisation

The National Kidney Federation (ALCER) is the leading organization in Spain dedicated to the awareness, prevention and treatment of kidney disease for hundreds of thousands of patients and their families, and millions of Spanish people at risk.

Here are the 5 top jobs healthy kidneys perform:
- Remove wastes and extra fluid. Kidneys act like a filter to remove wastes and extra fluid from the body. ...
- Control blood pressure. Kidneys need pressure to work properly. ...
- Make red blood cells. ...
- Keep bones healthy. ...
- Control pH Levels.
Chronic kidney disease includes conditions that damage kidneys and decrease their ability to keep people healthy by doing the jobs listed. If kidney disease gets worse, wastes can build to high levels in blood and make feel sick. People may develop complications like high blood pressure, anemia (low blood count), weak bones, poor nutritional health and nerve damage. Also, kidney disease increases risk of having heart and blood vessel disease. These problems may happen slowly over a long period of time. Chronic kidney disease may be caused by diabetes, high blood pressure and other disorders. Early detection and treatment can often keep chronic kidney disease from getting worse. When kidney disease progresses, it may eventually lead to kidney failure, which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain life.

Dialysis is a treatment that does some of the things done by healthy kidneys. It is needed when someone own kidneys can no longer take care of body's needs.
When kidneys fail, dialysis keeps body in balance by:

• removing waste, salt and extra water to prevent them from building up in the body
• keeping a safe level of certain chemicals in your blood, such as potassium, sodium and bicarbonate
• helping to control blood pressure

When people get a kidney transplant, a healthy kidney is placed inside their body to do the work their own kidneys can no longer do.
Although most transplants are successful and last for many years, how long they last can vary from one person to the next. Many people will need more than one kidney transplant during a lifetime.

ALCER Almería (Asociación para la lucha contra las enfermedades del riñón) (non profit association to fight against kidney diseases), belongs to the National Kidney Federation. We are a voluntary nonprofit health organization, that is dedicated to preventing kidney and urinary tract diseases, improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by chronic kidney disease and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation, raising awareness on organs donation among people in Almería.
