Description of organisation

JRS Romania is part of the Jesuit Refugee Service, a worldwide non-governmental organization currently present in over 50 countries. JRS-R works with asylum seekers, beneficiaries of international protection and holders of tolerated status. The mission is to accompany, serve and advocate with and for the rights of the said groups. JRS-R offers support to forcibly displaced persons through various EU and UNHCR-funded projects. JRS-R assists asylum seekers with voluntary return to the country of origin, enhances the integration of beneficiaries of international protection to the Romanian society and runs a centre of temporary accommodation for persons with tolerated status. In addition to offering support to individuals, JRS conducts advocacy on the field to advance legislative and policy changes especially when it comes to alternatives to detention of irregularly arriving migrants. JRS-R monitors the reception and detention conditions of asylum seekers and seeks to train relevant stakeholders (such as coastal guards, border police) to handle the cases with needed expertise. The organization works in close cooperation with GII (General Inspectorate for Immigration) and its sub-directorate DAI (Directorate of Asylum and Integration).
JRS-R has offices in Bucharest and across the country: Galati, Somcuta Mare, Giurgiu, Constanta, Timisoara, Radauti.
