description of organisation

Our educational institution San Giovanni Bosco is placed in Molfetta, a town less than 20 km north from Bari. Since the town
economy is based on fishing, agriculture, few business companies, the social background of our students is
heterogeneous.There is a medium percentage of foreign and immigrant families which have been integrating. The
identity of Istituto San Giovanni Bosco (Molfetta, Italy) is expressed in the three-year educational offer, PTOF, which plans for
early years, primary, secondary school and defines the informative and educational proposal that we offer. The document
covers the following areas: the principles and actions for the development of the students’ skills in their school subjects and as
citizens; promotion of the students’ wellbeing and inclusion; development of innovation in teaching methods; promotion of the
training of all the school’s personnel; curricular planning; collaboration with families and the local community; organizational
planning and governance of the school. Our educational choices are aimed at carrying out what is mentioned in the National
Guidelines for Pre-primary, primary and secondary school (Indicazioni nazionali per il curricolo, 2012), in accordance with the
European objectives and the EU Programme 2020, which are developed through 8 key skills for effective learning:
communication in the mother tongue, communication in foreign languages, mathematical skills and basic scientific and
technological skills, digital skills, learning to learn, social and civic skills, spirit of initiative and entrepreneurship, cultural
awareness and expressiveness. According to New Guidelines (2012), the general aim of school is the harmonious and
comprehensive development of the individual, according to the principles of the Italian Constitution and the European cultural
tradition, to be achieved through the promotion of knowledge, respect for individual diversity and the active involvement of
students and their families. Specifically, the purpose of primary education is to enable pupils to acquire the fundamental
knowledge and skills to develop basic cultural competence. The subjects taught during the 5 years of primary school are:
Italian, English, history, geography, mathematics, sciences, technology, music, art, sports education, Catholic religion
(optional). The curriculum includes the teaching of 'Citizenship and Constitution' that schools must include it in their three-year
educational offer plan. It is not a separate subject and its contents are developed by individual schools through teaching
projects. Each subject has goals for the development of skills, to be reached at the end of primary education, which are
mandatory for teachers. The National guidelines also set, for each subject, the learning objectives that indicate the experience
fields, knowledge and skills which are needed to reach the goals for the development of competences at the end of primary
education. The weekly timetable is organized as follows:
• for pre-primary school: five days from 8.00 am to 16.00 pm;
• for primary school: classes which have 27 hours organized in five days from 8.00 am to 01.30 p.m. and classes which have
40 hours, organized in five days from 8.00 am to 16.00 pm.
• for classes in the secondary cycle: five days from 8.00 am to 14.00 and one afternoon at school with expressive laboratory of
Literature. Next year, it will be possible to have an enhancement at school with physical education laboratory.

acquisition of citizenship skills. We promote the awareness of personal identity, responsibility and autonomy through selfrespect
and self-confidence in favour of social solidarity; sustain the development of critical thinking through reasoning,
dialogue and debate; raise awareness for a correct relationship with the environment and the responsible use of resources;
educate students in the use of lexical, logical and operative tools and promote their interest in research and study; support
teachers’ research and educational experimentation in order to help the learning process.
