Movijovem is a Cooperative of Public Interest, multisectoral with operations in the field of social solidarity and services, with its cooperators being the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth, IP, which holds 80% of the share capital, the National Youth Council and the National Federation Youth Associations, which hold 10% of the share capital, respectively.
Movijovem was founded in March 1991 and, since then, its main purpose is to promote, support and foment youth mobility and tourism actions, in a sustainable, inclusive and universal way, enabling Portuguese young people, especially those with less resources, a more direct contact with the reality and the cultural, historical and natural heritage of the country, thus contributing to enhance its socio-educational background and to strengthen cultural ties between countries and regions.
Movijovem's commitment is to promote youth mobility in the social, educational, cultural, sporting and recreational aspects to all young people, national and foreign, providing them with unique and enriching experiences through a representative network of the different regions of the country, with innovative services that guarantee quality, hygiene and safety standards, at competitive prices.
In exercising its powers, Movijovem is the only entity that, in Portugal, is responsible for the management of the National Youth Tourism Network, which includes the so-called Youth Hostels, and the European Youth Card. Movijovem is also co-owner, with CP - Comboios de Portugal, of the INTRA_RAIL program, that consist in a social pass which combines unlimited train travel and accommodation at Youth Hostels.
Movijovem is a member of several European and international organizations, including the EYCA (European Youth Card Association) and IYHF (International Youth Hostel Federation). In addition, it establishes partnerships and regular exchanges with foreign entities that allow the strengthening of cooperation ties, developing joint programs and activities of mutual interest.
Currently, around 340 permanent workers collaborate in Movijovem.
