Egas Moniz Higher Education School (EMHES) is a prestigious higher education institution in Portugal dedicated to the areas of health and forensic sciences with a long tradition in teaching and research in areas such as Nursing, Nutrition, Psychology, Gerontology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dental Medicine, among many others.

With an experience of more than 30 years, EMHES currently has almost 2500 students, a significant number of whom are foreigners.

This plurality of people, studies and nationalities, brought EMHES an inseparable characteristic of multiculturalism.

EMHES is focused in the advancement of knowledge, learning and education of its students, at the service of improving the health conditions of global society in the 21st century.

EMHES owns an elderly residence and two outpatient clinics where students have the possibility to train the application of health and patient care. EMHES has a connection to several universities, both in the country and abroad, companies, hospitals, health centers and social solidarity institutions, which guarantee the easy integration of their students into professional life.

EMHES aims to be a reference educational institution in the training of health professionals, ensuring that they achieve a solid technical and human training. EMHES is also determined to be an institution that, in addition to ensuring its training and research purposes, manages, at the same time, to constitute itself as a pole of social responsibility strongly inserted in the local community, providing health care and others to the Community, particularly the most deprived.

EMHES has as two of the strategic pillars the interaction with the community and social responsibility.

EMHES develops with the community an interaction, which forms one of the foundations of EMHES and is an integral part of the daily experience of our students, teachers and mutual benefits between society and EMHES. Egas Moniz intend to continue to pay special attention to the needy populations of the District of Setúbal. The work carried out in the area of health, with care in all its stadiums, from prevention to treatment, through support, including in justice, allows us to have the ambition to achieve the design of new subsidiaries that achieve, increase and enhance new objectives for the development of a policy of correcting asymmetries and levelling populations in their access to education, culture, health and the defence of their rights.

The integration by EMHES in 2017 in the Observatory of Social Responsibility of Higher Education (ORSIES), marked the entry into a collaborative network of High Education Institutions, with the support of the State Secretariat of Science, Technology and Higher Education.

EMHES has developed an important role in the social responsibility aspect in line with the process of renewal and readjustment of High Education Institutions missions in Portugal and the world, characterized by involvement with society and the assumption of the concepts of scientific, academic and cultural citizenship, enhancing synergies and multiplying energies.

The commitment to the management level of EMHES is total, respecting four axes:

1. Ethical and environmental management of the Institution to avoid negative impacts;
2. Training of conscientious, innovative and supportive citizens;
3. Production and dissemination of socially relevant knowledge in the community;
4. Social participation in promoting more equitable and sustainable development with local authorities, organizing meetings.
