Description of organisation

CLARA - Center for Rural Future is a research, training and innovation center for rural regenerative development located in the beautiful Alentejo region of southern Portugal. As a collaborative work space based on interdisciplinary knowledge, reflection and production, we provide a stimulating ambiance where creative minds can engage in a comprehensive discourse on local issues and invent solutions encouraging the commitment of all parties involved.
Transforming a derelict brick factory that once served as an economic and social anchor for the region into a Center for Rural Future, we host activities from residencies, cultural events, workshops and conferences to incubators for social entrepreneurship, volunteer campaigns and tourism at the intersections of: art, design/architecture, food culture and ecosystem regeneration.
Regionally anchored and internationally connected, we are bridging the gap between the urban and the rural and create shared values. Promoting dialogue, experimentation, research, innovation and the transfer of knowledge, we challenge patterns of thinking and behavior, and explore contemporary solutions for the revitalization of low density regions.
With our network of national and international partners we are drawing a pool of diverse, creative minds to explore and valorize the indigenous resources this beautiful, diversified region has to offer and create new opportunities.
Integrating, involving and empowering the local community and new residents, embracing their skills, perspectives and traditions, we create innovative, sustainable models for life, work, land management and ethical tourism in rural zones.
By restoring ecosystems, tapping and promoting the full potential of the region and extending its cultural offer, we improve local living conditions, support artists and designers, and attract more visitors, new residents, talent and investment to the area.
CLARA is promoted and managed by Project Earth a non-profit private association.
