description of organisation

I) Company Introduction
Located at the heart of Debrecen’s Great Forest, Debrecen Zoo and Amusement Park is one of the most visited public institutions in the city, situated in a popular area near Aquaticum Spa Debrecen, Nagyerdei Stadium, and Debrecen Sports Centre. Today’s visitors will find themselves in a park that is dynamically changing, with a shift from the old types of enclosures from past decades towards more naturalistic exhibits that not only do a better job at showcasing the natural behavior of animals, but are also a lot more beneficial for their welfare and comfort. Formed in 1961 with the merging of Hungary’s first zoo outside the capital (1958) and the amusement park right next to it (1960), we have greatly expanded from our humble original premises and are now home to some 900 individuals of 170 species from five continents on 17 hectares.
The Amusement Park is currently the only one of its kind in Hungary with a total of 22 rides and attractions, a number of which have entertained visitors ever since we first opened. Besides preserving timeless classic rides and experiences for each subsequent generation, we also try to bring something new to the table every year. An iconic symbol of the close-knit ties between our Zoo and Amusement Park is the Safari Train at the main entrance, offering families a pleasant ride with an African theme.
A protected area since 1994, our institution is also home to an ever-growing botanical park, with 650 local and exotic plant species.
Operating as a nonprofit limited liability company with full municipal ownership since July 1, 2009, we are a founding member of the Hungarian Association of Zoos (MÁSZ) since 1983 and a full member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) since 1994, the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) since 2015, and the Hungarian Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta (MABOSZ) since 2018.
In 2020, we had an average number of 67 employees, including an average of 3 employees in public employment, and a total of 51 employees in simplified employment.

Start of operations: “NAGYERDEI KULTÚRPARK Közhasznú Nonprofit Korlátolt Felelősségű Társaság” was formed in 2009 as a successor to “Nagyerdei Kultúrpark Kht.” Between 1958 and 2000, we operated as an institution of Debrecen Municipality.

II) Events
The role of zoos has significantly changed in the past decade, with an increasing emphasis on a Noah’s Ark-like role in the conservation of wildlife. Zooeducation is now a separate field with new and exciting tasks; our thematic activities, guided tours, zoo camps, games and events are all designed to help visitors of all ages make their very own discoveries and gain direst insight into the secrets and wonders of nature and wildlife.

III) Fields of Activity

III/1) Activities in the Public Interest
Main activity: Operation of a zoo, botanical garden, or nature reserve
