Description of organisation
Bolwerk is an independent non-profit organization. As a cultural (maker) space, Bolwerk focuses on creation, encounter, wonder and sustainability. The organization develops its operation and carries out its projects based on these basic values.
There are three ‘entities’ within the day-to-day operation: the Atelier where installations for public space are conceived, designed and built, the Public House where a broad range of people meet, exchange organize and the Production House through which installations are shown and rolled out in cities across Belgium and other European countries.
Bolwerk attracts and connects young people to its activities through ‘Jongbloed’, a platform for young entrepreneurs, makers, artists and organizers.

Since the end of 2019, Bolwerk has been transforming a derelict, industrial site to an accessible and inclusive creative hub for young and old. The goal is to create a unique and versatile infrastructure based on sustainable principles that is suited to create with many different target groups, to give the floor to a multitude of artists and to welcome a diverse public. As part of this transformation the neighboring ‘outside area’ (an abandoned plot of land) next to our premises has equally been refashioned into a public and biodiverse park zone: the Bolwerk Garden.
- This organisation holds a European Solidarity Corps Quality Label. The Quality Label certifies that the organisation is able to run projects in compliance with the principles and objectives of the European Solidarity Corps.
