Description of organisation

Askov Højskole is a traditional Danish folk high school, founded in 1865, because of the loss of southern part of Denmark due to the war in 1864. Therefore, we have from the beginning been aware of the importance of democracy and the right for people to be represented and to have a voice. Democracy is an important part of how we understand our purpose as a folk high school, and our focus today is still to achieve open dialogue between people and to work on a democratic basis. Another aim for our school is lifelong learning and enlightenment about life.
Askov Folk High School offers longer term courses of 4 - 24 weeks, and shorter courses of 1 week. Our students come from all over the country and from other countries over the world, and everyone can be a student if they are 18 years or more.
The Folk High School is combined with a boarding school for younger students (15-17 years, called Askov Efterskole, app. 120 students).
Staff members app. 45 people, and of them app. 8-10 teachers in the folk high school. App. 60 students in the long-term courses (18 - 30 years old), and during a year app. 1200 people at the week courses (45 -90 years old).
