Madeiran Heritage - sharing our legacy

Funchal, Madeira, Portugal

Project description

The main goal of the project is to contribute to the spreading of the cultural heritage of the 500-year-old city of Funchal, the "capital" of the Portuguese island of Madeira. The main tasks of the volunteer are to study the history of the city so that he/she can guide visitors (foreign and even locals) through the old part of the town and other historical buildings such as the old Jesuits' College and Church, the City Hall and the "Palace" of the Regional Government. All the money obtained from the guided tours, be it the price for the tour or donations goes to help students of the university of Madeira, as well as other solidarity projects of the hosting organisation, since it is a non-profit organisation. The volunteer will work from Monday to Friday between 5 to 7 hours per day, and will have usually weekends as free days.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The volunteer will stay in the University of Madeira Students' residence which has around 31 double rooms and 45 triple rooms, meaning he/she would share the room. The participant can choose between having breakfast, lunch or dinner at the residence or get a food allowance to take care on his/her own of the meals. (Cooking your own meals is strongly recommended) The residence is 15-20 minutes away on foot from the workplace. Regarding public transportation through the island, there are only buses and taxis. The airport of Madeira has direct flights to different major European cities.

Training during the project

The volunteer will get information on EVS and the project from the sending organization, IDEA, Ayuntamiento de Alzira. AAUMa will enrol the volunteer on the EVS On-arrival and Mid-term training sessions organized by the Portuguese National Agency. The volunteers will also receive extensive training, through formal and non-formal means, on the history and culture of Madeira. Also, the volunteer may have the opportunity to join a Portuguese language course.

Volunteer profile

The volunteer should be a patient and persistent person, who is always trying to learn more and keep himself/herself busy. Interest for history and culture is a plus and a quite good level of English language is a must (at least B1). Knowing other European languages is also a major advantage but not that important. The project is only for people from Spain or who have official Spanish residence!
