Democracy, transparency, equal partnerships and sustainability are some of the core values that characterize the European Union. A key role of the EU is to guarantee these principles in the EU area, enabling the creation of a fully democratic Union to be lived by its citizens.

Outside the EU borders, however, these values are often not respected across the world. The Global Gateway strategy (GG) aims at tackling this issue, merging two important functions of the EU external action. On one hand, it establishes partnerships with other countries across the globe, especially in relation to the African and Asiatic continent. On the other hand, the GG objective is to boost these principles outside the EU, creating valuable connections and benefits for the local communities involved.

Will the EU manage to achieve a fully connected, democratic and sustainable network within 2027? How will it face the difficulties of approaching different countries across the world? How will it manage to compete with other similar initiatives? What kind of projects the GG is implementing right now and what will be the effects in the upcoming future? David Ringrose, Head of Division of the Global Gateway, in charge of connectivity and digital transition, will tell us more about how the EU is acting externally through the GG.
