Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange: harnessing the power of technology to build intercultural understanding

Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange is a concrete demonstration of modern technologies’ power to bridge divides and build intercultural understanding in an inclusive way.
Through a range of activities, offered in English, French and Arabic, Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange aims to expand the reach and scope of the Erasmus+ programme through Virtual Exchanges, which are technology-enabled people-to-people dialogues sustained over a period of time. Working with universities and youth organisations, the project is open to any young person aged 18-30 residing in Europe and the Southern Mediterranean.
“Virtual Exchange is revolutionary! I exchanged opinions with people living far away, discovered new ideas, cultures and practised news languages”. Highlighted, Ana Maria from Romania, after participating in Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange.
Such programming can bring unprecedented numbers of people together as part of their formal or non-formal education, including those young people who have traditionally been disconnected from a highly relevant skill-building and transformative opportunity.
The project offers a safe online community to participate in facilitated discussions, increasing cross-cultural understanding and building 21st Century skills through Virtual Exchange. It promotes intercultural dialogue, employability, and citizenship, strengthening the youth dimension of the EU neighbourhood policy.
These meaningful cross-cultural experiences have a profound impact on the way in which young people engage one another across lines of perceived or actual difference. The “Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange Impact Report 2018” shows strong evidence of the development of key soft skills among participants: foreign languages, teamwork, collaborative problem-solving, critical thinking and media literacy.
