Halfway into the “Newcomers and Nationalism” Course
More than 400 participants from almost 70 different nationalities are currently taking part in the course ‘Newcomers and Nationalism’. Divided over 24 groups they are discussing topics like multiculturalism, global and local identities and (im)migration. Lead by skilled online dialogue facilitators and inspired by thematic video lectures, the participants are encouraged to share their experiences, opinions and unique perspectives on these current topics.
At 6 of the 10 weeks in the programme, we can see the group process is taking shape; participants that previously never met, from different parts of europe and the Southern mediterranean are trusting each other with personal stories. For example how ‘borders’ and travel restrictions have impacted their personal lives and that of their families. Or how some of these young people’s lives are affected by negative stereotypes.
These conversations are clearly going beyond presenting general opinions and that participants are opening up, sharing deep feelings and vulnerabilities. In return, fellow group members respond with great empathy and curiosity.
Facilitators also note how in this stage of the programme, real connections are being made. In one group for example, two participants, one Native English speaker and one Syrian already made plans to start a language exchange after this course ends.
With another 4 weeks ahead, their facilitators already dread the moment when participants need to say goodbye to each other in the final online group meeting.
