How can debating change the way we think and speak?

Sist oppdatert Fredag, 13/03/2026

In this interview, I speak with Gianluca Pedron, head of DiCo (Debate and Communicate), one of Italy’s key debating communities.

Gianluca studied philosophy, works as a social media strategist and debate coach, and regularly organises debate tournaments. We talk about how he first fell in love with university debating, how that journey shaped him, and why he believes debate can change not only how we argue but how we understand each other

With years of experience in competitive debating, coaching, and community building, Gianluca reflects on how debate transforms us: how it sharpens listening, deepens empathy, and teaches us to understand arguments before judging them. As he notes, “If a doctor cannot explain what is happening, you would be frightened. Communication changes everything.”

We also explore how debating works behind the scenes, from training new speakers to creating spaces where ideas meet and evolve. Gianluca shares why, in his view, debate deserves a place in every educational path, even in secondary schools, and how it can enrich not only our public voice but also our everyday relationships. As he puts it, “A mission came in — a mission to bring debating and good communication to everybody.
