CoLibri Democratic School
Predklasteri, Czechia
Description
We are a democratic school where children are fully responsible for what they are learning and how. There is no curriculum or scheduled lessons. Children are free to play and follow their inner voice, their passions, goals and aspirations. Staff members act as facilitators, to help children achieve their goals. The school meeting makes all the decisions related to an everyday running of the school. The volunteer will become a staff memeber, who, as a non-Czech speaker, can encourage the motivation of children to learn English and other languages. S/he will most of the time be with children, help them fulfill their goals, whether it means to read a book or help them build a wooden shed. S/he will be prompted to organize workshops, hobby club, etc. based on her/his interests and expertise. They can help with organizing events for the children. They will help us with setting up processes and procedures, and will bring in their uniqueness and enthusiasm.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
The volunteer will have a bedroom in a house in town center of Tišnov. This house will be shared with other volunteers, together they will use the kitchen and bathroom. Good internet connection is provided. Meals will either be prepared at school or the volunteer will bring her/his meal. The meal in the morning, in the evening and during weekends will be arranged by the volunteer. The trip to and from school will be arranged for by bike, by walk or bus. There is good train connection to the city of Brno.
Training during the activity
The volunteer will be offered Czech lessons with an experienced lector. If s/he is interested, s/he can visit training, short time courses and seminars with other members of the school staff. At school s/he will improve her/his communication and language skills. S/he will gain insight into and a first-hand experience with running a democratic school, its challenges and beauties and thus will be able to comapre it to other pedagogical approaches. The volunteer will have the opportunity to visit other democratic schools in the Czech Republic.
Participant profile
The volunteer can be anyone who is interested in or has experience with unschooling and democratic schooling, who wishes to work with school aged children, and has an appropriate physical condition (the school involves outdoor physical activities during all seasons) and mental fitness (the children can be sometimes noisy and very active). Open-mindedness, playfulness, sense of humour and enthusiasm are appreciated as well as a good level of spoken english. If there are more applicants with similar profile we prefer a person who can stay for a whole year. The volunteer can stay 6 - 12 months.
