Descripción

Conservation of large carnivores and reduction of human-wildlife conflict: the case of the Greek Shepherd Dog Breeding and Redistribution Center. The Greek Shepherd Dog Breeding and Redistribution Centre breeds and distributes dogs to livestock farmers in areas with bear/wolf presence. ARCTUROS promotes using livestock guarding dogs as a human-wildlife conflict mitigation measure. Since 1998, when the program was launched as a prevention scheme for carnivore damage, ARCTUROS has distributed more than 1500 dogs to shepherds that suffered a conflict with wildlife. This activity will strengthen the protection of European brown bears and European grey wolves (both endangered and protected species). It will simultaneously enhance the shepherd livestock and the race of the Greek Sheepheed Dog, which was almost near to extinction a few years ago. The breeding program is implemented in modern facilities in Agrapidia village in Florina region (Greece).
