WE ArtCoop is a Humanitarian Aid ESC project that involves a total of 15 young people in the development of a project to raise awareness and empower women and children in Shianda (Kenya) that live in vulnerable situation due to gender-based violence and its consequences. For 6 months, 9 volunteers will join and support WEFOCO’s team in creating new spaces for women and children, promoting active participation and involvement of the target group in their empowerment process, and promoting critical conscientiousness in each context through raising awareness. Volunteers will design, develop and deliver innovative, non-formal education and artistic methods to raise awareness to different social problems detected on their context, by working on mental health, consequences of gender-based violence and the importance of sexual education. The volunteers will join WEFOCO’s activities to promote mental health and create spaces to share experiences and opinions.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Volunteers will be provided the followings, covered by the ESC Humanitarian Aid fundings: • Transportation to and from the project’s intervention place in Shianda; • Accommodation in WEFOCO installations prepared for young volunteers. Volunteers will stay on the same location during the whole volunteering period. From the first day of their volunteering volunteers will have their accommodation prepared; • Food on demand; • Visa; • Pocket money; • Phone and internet allowance;

Training during the activity

At the beginning of the volunteering period, volunteers will observe WEFOCO’s activities and will interact with the community to know where they participate. Later on, based on their observations volunteers will propose activities and intervention and develop different artistic awareness and training activities with the community in WEFOCO’s projects and programs. Volunters will carry out regular activities with the community, they will learn how to plan and develop activities and propose new activities. Volunteers and tutors will jointly evaluate the activities developed.

Participant profile

Volunteers must be interested in developing artistic and community skills, working with excluded communities to empower their identity. It is valued to have knowledge in socio-educational field and have non-formal education skills. It is also important to have a vocation on social themes. Former participation in social projects with excluded communities, youth and population is acknowledged. It is important for the youth to have interest related to exclusion, woman rights violations and motivation to learn about social realities and community art methodologies to work on empowerment. Volunteers must be ready to adapt to new environments and be open minded. It is also important for volunteers to be able to work both in teams and individually and be self-starter. This project also gives the opportunity to participate to people with fewer opportunities, which refers to a young person who faces any barrier in terms of: disabilities, health problems, barriers linked to education and training systems, cultural differences, social barriers, economic barriers, barriers linked to discrimination, geographical barriers, etc.
