Description

The volunteer will work as part of the Red Cross program Social Support for Asylum Seekers. The program consists of several targeted projects that carry out weekly social activities for people applying for international protection in Iceland. Activities currently take place in Árskógar Community Center, Vitatorg Community Center and in Reykjanesbaer, a 45 minutes’ drive from Reykjavik. Social activities currently include a Women’s Group, Youth Club, Open House and Language Classes. The program aims to help reduce social isolation and give asylum seekers an opportunity to stay active during the application period, as well as offer a platform to meet, connect, socialize, and learn about Icelandic society and culture. A key element of the Red Cross support program in addressing the challenge of not only reducing social isolation but working towards the social inclusion of people seeking international protection in Iceland is involving the greater public—through volunteering.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The volunteer will live in a house near the centre of Reykjavik with up to 7 other volunteers. Each volunteer has a private bedroom, kitchen, living room and bathroom is shared. A food allowance will be given as well as a bus pass for the whole year and Icelandic courses. Training during the activity

The volunteer is obliged to attend on-arrival training and midterm evaluation in Iceland and get informed on end-of-term evaluation meetings in the sending country. The volunteer will receive some language training whilst in Iceland. Ongoing support and training will be provided by the Icelandic Red Cross and personal support will be given by the volunteer’s mentor as well as the coordinating organisation AUS. Participant profile

Be 24 yrs old min. Social, interested in getting to know people, organized, able to perform well under pressure, able to work independently and take initiative. Good team worker. Good communication skills, open-minded and willing to listen and show empathy. Able to take initiative. Have excellent English language skills. Other languages, especially Spanish, Arabic, Ukrainian or Russian are a strong advantage. Have basic computer skills. Have a strong interest in the field of migration.
