Culture, creativity and children in Siwa
Stichting UcDean
Siwa, Égypte
Description
Discover the beautiful Siwa oasis in Egypt! Organize arts and crafts activities for children, help in the restaurant, take care of the vegetable garden and exchange language and culture with Siwan adolescents. Torraha is a women-led foundation, which is rare in its conservative environment. They focus on empowering women through crafts, promoting opportunities for children and increasing the employability and broadening the horizons of youth. The majority of your hours will be spent in the restaurant, helping to serve guests, tend to the vegetable garden, and work on decorations for specific seasonal events (ramadan, christmas, valentine's day). Cultural and linguistic exchange with the local young staff are an important part of the job. On weekends and school holidays you will facilitate workshops for the children. In this you will work together with the other volunteer(s) to come up with new activities, such as crafts but also games or informative sessions with a playful touch.
Modalités d'hébergement, de restauration et de transport
Volunteers must be ready to live in simple facilities. Siwa is an old, small town where electricity cuts and wifi problems are common. Life has a different rhythm, connected to the seasons of the desert. The work place is within walking distance of the accommodation. There are also bicycles available to go to work and to explore the beautiful surroundings. Tuktuks (scooters with a pickup truck) are also a main form of transportation. To get to Siwa you will take an overnight bus from Alexandria or Cairo.
Formation pendant l’activité
Apart from the regular ESC trainings, you will have the chance to participate in traditional handcraft workshops and learn to cook traditional dishes.
