Sintropic and Regenerative Agriculture in Canary Islands
Gaia Tasiri Association
Garafía, Spain
Description
To fully apply and be considered as a candidate, please read all the information on our webpage and fill out the application form you will find on fincaluna.org The program offers a 10 months experience in 2 different farms. You will learn and practice about sintropic agroforestry, regenerative agriculture, and permaculture design. It includes intense physical work, theory workshops and a multicultural volunteer community experience, all with a focus on learning by doing. You will share this experience in groups of 2 in each farm during 4 months, and then with a group of 6 volunteers in another farm during 6 months. It is a long term program to allow you to deepen the concepts you learn and to see the evolution of your practice and abilities. Volunteers come from different countries, included from Spain. We work 7 hours daily ranging from routine farm work (garden, forest, animals, plant nursery, bioconstruction), group projects, workshops, and community work in other farms.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Volunteers are hosted in the farms, in shared bedrooms, with access to shared bathroom and kitchen. Comfort is basic as some facilities are located outside . In winter, rain is frequent and temperature can go down to -2 degrees celsius by night (it can be cold inside too because of humidity). This is probably not the image you have of Canary Island but farms are located in mountain areas, not on the coast! In summer, we work with 35-37 degrees. Food is covered partially by farm produces, partially by money allowance to buy products in the market. Meals are cooked and shared among volunteers.
Training during the activity
The aim of our project is to train you so that you can improve your awareness of the natural environment, have a good understanding of what regenerative agriculture is, design and build your own food forest, and become leader of sustainability in your community. We focus on learning by doing, where mistakes are part of the process. Our goal is that you enhance your confidence and autonomy in conducting ecological farm tasks. Volunteers are trained through workshops offered by the coordinators as well as by fellow volunteers.
