VIRTAIN KAUPUNKI

Pälkäne, Finlande

Description

The project takes place in the municipality of Pälkäne in Southern Finland and offers a four-month volunteering experience focused on youth work, community activities and nature-based events. The volunteer will support local youth centres, school youth work, library and cultural services, as well as early childhood education during excursions and larger outdoor events, such as the “Metsäseikkailu” (Forest Adventure). The aim is to strengthen community involvement, promote intercultural learning and offer meaningful opportunities for young people in Pälkäne. The volunteer will work together with local staff, participate in international evenings, assist in organising activities for different age groups and experience Finnish nature, culture and everyday life while contributing to the well-being of the community.

Modalités d'hébergement, de restauration et de transport

The volunteer will live in a furnished apartment in the centre of Pälkäne. Meals are provided at schools and the youth centre, and the volunteer can also buy groceries for cooking at home using the municipality’s account. As daily transport is not needed due to the central location, the youth services will arrange transport for activities taking place outside the town centre.

Formation pendant l’activité

Volunteer will have the supervisor, the youth work coordinator of Pälkäne, that support the volunteer on their tasks and questions related on living in Pälkäne. The volunteer will have a mentor to support wellbeing, leisure time and learning process. The volunteer will have a chance to get together with volunteers in the city of Kangasala. On arrival training held in the Youth Centre Villa Elba, Kokkola, will be included the volunteering period.

Profil du participant

We are looking for two (2) positive, open-minded and responsible volunteers who enjoys working with children and young people. A friendly attitude, willingness to learn, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are important. No specific professional background is required, but previous experience in youth work, education, culture, or organising activities is considered an advantage. The volunteer will participate in a variety of tasks within Pälkäne’s youth services, culture services and library. Typical duties include assisting in youth work activities, supporting events at the youth centres, and helping with international-themed evenings. The volunteers will also join school youth work activities and support cultural and library events for different age groups. In early childhood education, the volunteer may assist with excursions and larger events. For example, in May we organise a major outdoor sports event for all early childhood groups, called Metsäseikkailu (“Forest Adventure”), where extra helping hands are needed. Early childhood groups also make many spring and summer trips, and the volunteers can support these activities. It is important that the volunteer is willing to be active outdoors in different weather conditions, enjoys interacting with children and young people, and feels comfortable in a flexible, community-oriented environment. Basic English is sufficient; Finnish skills are not required, but learning some Finnish during the stay is encouraged and supported.
