The power of together

1. Live Solidarity on a Norwegian Island – Volunteer with Community, Culture and Nature in Dønna

Dønna Frivilligsentral

DØNNA, Norway

Description

Would you like to experience Norway beyond the cities? On the island of Dønna, you will live close to nature and become part of a tight-knit community where solidarity and cooperation shape everyday life. As a volunteer, you will take part in youth activities, language cafés, cultural events, creative workshops, and social gatherings for all ages. You will share daily life with locals, learn about Norwegian traditions, and contribute your own ideas and energy. This project is ideal for curious, independent volunteers who want to grow, connect across cultures, and experience a slower, more meaningful way of living in Northern Norway.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Volunteers will stay in Solfjellsjøen with welcoming host families or in fully equipped apartments, with all meals and local transport provided. Norway is not in the EU, so volunteers need to secure funding through programs in their home country. Enjoy a safe, comfortable stay while fully experiencing island life, connecting with locals, and taking part in community activities on Dønna.

Training during the activity

You’ll get a full introduction to your tasks, the community, and how things work on Dønna, with ongoing guidance and support from our team. Through hands-on activities, workshops, and teamwork with locals, you’ll develop practical, digital, and intercultural skills. This is a great chance to try new things, make friends, and fully immerse yourself in island life while contributing to meaningful community projects!

Participant profile

We’re looking for curious, open-minded volunteers who enjoy meeting new people and trying new experiences. Independence, flexibility, creativity, and a hands-on attitude are key. Volunteers should be motivated to contribute to the community, participate in activities with locals of all ages, and be eager to learn about Norwegian culture, language, and island life. Basic digital skills are required, and a love of nature or outdoor activities is a plus!
