SOLIDARITES JEUNESSES MCP

Les Villages des Jeunes, délégation régionale de Solidarités Jeunesses en Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

VEYNES, France

Description

For 20 years, volunteers from all over the world have been committed to preserving the remains of a former village in ruins. Will you be the next one to join the adventure? Located between the Alps and Provence, the ancient village of Arzeliers stands on a hill, offering a panoramic view of the Durance valley. There are remains of 12th-century buildings: a castle, a chapel, traces of fortifications, and several houses. For several years, in partnership with the municipality of Laragne, the association Les Villages des Jeunes has been working to maintain and promote the remains of the Arzeliers castle. The various works organized on this site aim to consolidate the ruins of this precious architectural work, while enriching its history through the intercultural encounters unique to international workcamps.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

You will stay in individual tents at the municipal campsite. A large shared tent will serve as the kitchen and common meeting space. You will have access to the campsite’s sanitary facilities and equipment. We aim to reduce our environmental impact by eating mostly local food and limiting meat to twice a week. Daily life is organized collectively, including menu planning (vegetarian, vegan, etc.), shopping, and activities. Grocery trips are arranged using available on-site vehicles when needed.

Training during the activity

You will help consolidate the stone masonry walls of the ancient village of Arzeliers. After learning to prepare plaster mortar, you will repair the upper wall sections exposed to weather. A local craftswoman will guide you in applying mortar and in workshops on preparing and firing traditional local plaster. From Monday to Friday, you will work on site in the mornings. Two group members cook daily on a rotating basis. Tasks include masonry, tool and meal preparation, and organizing collective life.
