Description
ICYE Brazil invites volunteers to join the CAVAN Project, a Humanitarian Aid ESC initiative. This program offers a 6-month voluntary experience with the Umbúntu social project in a disadvantaged district of Alvorada city. Umbúntu provides a community and cultural space with workshops on topics like edible plant processing, handicrafts, capoeira, percussion, and language teaching. Volunteers will have a hands-on experience in environmentally sustainable practices by participating in farming, permaculture gardening, construction and other manual activities of our project. The main aims are to provide humanitarian aid, raise awareness about climate change and encourage discussions on green alternatives. Join us now! Please note starting dates should be around May 2026.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
ICYE Brasil will ensure volunteers are hosted safely and comfortably in a shared flat, providing hot and cold water, Wi-Fi, a washing machine, and private and shared spaces. Breakfast and dinner are provided at home on weekdays by themselves, while lunch and snacks are offered by the project. Weekends include all meals at home. Umbúntu’s focus on organic produce allows volunteers to enjoy and prepare healthy food. Transportation to and from the project is arranged via local bus or Uber, ensuring smooth commutes within Alvorada. Volunteers will receive a monthly pocket money of 250€.
Training during the activity
Volunteers receive extensive online pre-departure training covering the ESC Humanitarian Aid Framework, healthcare, roles and responsibilities, security, communication, critical thinking and self-care. On arrival, further training is provided by the host organisation. A qualified mentor supports integration into community activities. A mid-term evaluation takes place after about three months, followed by a final follow-up meeting 2–3 months after return. Continuous support is ensured throughout the entire period.
Participant profile
We seek open-minded, passionate, dedicated, and motivated individuals to work with disadvantaged communities. Ideal volunteers love interacting with children and enjoy urban gardening, agroforestry, and bioconstruction. After completing assigned tasks, volunteers should independently find ways to contribute to the project. Knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese is highly welcome. Eligibility: Candidates must be 18 to 35 years old, reside in one of the eligible countries (EU Member State, North Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Turkey), have completed the compulsory Humanitarian Aid Volunteering training and not have participated before in individual Humanitarian Aid Volunteering. When adding together this new volunteering opportunity and any previous participation in EU volunteering programmes, the total duration cannot exceed 12 months.
