"Kultur- und Initiativenhaus" (meaning "house for culture and initiatives") in our association's name is located in Greifswald, Germany. We call it "STRAZE" (due to its address Stralsunder Straße 10). The historic building has a long history, but was at threat of being demolished to make space for office buildings. In 2008 a dedicated group of people founded our association to fight the investors and save the building. With success!
For more than a decade "STRAZE" has been restored and refurbished in countless hours into the socio-cultural centre it is today. It is a centre for learning and culture, an open space for the civic society in Greifswald and beyond. Under STRAZE's roof you find open space workshops, a café, library, seminar rooms, office space for many NGOs, and at its heart the historic hall - a place for theater, concerts, and much more. Our association itself - the "Kultur- und Initiativenhaus Greifswald e.V." - is active in various areas of social, cultural, and educational work.
Projects of the association are:
1. The international volunteering initiative Turbina Pomerania:
Supported by a network of initiatives and associations in Greifswald and beyond, a cross-border plattform for civil society engagement has been developed with many international partners. Volunteers from around the world have the opportunity to take part in volunteering mobilities at STRAZE and other hosting organisation partners in the fields of environmental, developmental, intercultural, or anti-racist issues. It is the projects aim to enable young people to play an active role in shaping the local community and therefore the society of tomorrow.
2. The non-formal education project "verquer."
verquer. is an interdisciplinary non-formal educaton project about global learning. A team of around 30 people and 4 part-time employees who are committed to a global perspective and more justice in Western Pomerania are active in this initiative. For example, as part of project days and weeks with school classes and groups, with a radio project VeRa or at the summer camp and our youth clubs.
3. The "Partnership for democracy"
The Partnership for Democracy Greifswald is one of over 300 partnerships that have been formed as part of the federal program “Live Democracy!”. Greifswald applied and started the partnership together with the Kultur- und Initiativenhaus Greifswald e.V. in 2019.
The core element of a partnership for democracy is the promotion and strengthening of a lively, diverse and open democracy through active cooperation between politics, administration, organizations, institutions and civil society. The aim is to forge a long-term, local partnership between the partners, which, as a solidary community, sends a visible signal against racism and for human rights.
4. The [druckkammer]
Using culturally significant printing techniques at the open printing space [druckkammer] (meaning "printing chamber"), the participants and visitors learn to break through their usual perspectives and ways to express themselves in the various workshops. The different approaches, which range from purely manual to digital implementation, pave the way for an individual and concise form of expression and connecting with other people during projects like screen printing for a local event. The free experimentation, as well as learning of basic printing techniques can be experienced from scratch.
5. The House of Ressources
The House of Resources project in Greifswald was founded in early 2021. The House of Resources project aims to strengthen civic engagement. A special focus is on supporting regional and local migrant organizations. We also support other integrative groups, associations and committed individuals.
6. The STRAZE itself - it's cultural programme, public relations, the café, the library

We would like to give international volunteers the opportunity to get to know us, our work and the region of Western Pomerania. At the same time, we are convinced that we ourselves, our project partners and ultimately the entire region can only benefit if different people enrich our work with their experiences, ideas and perspectives. We wish for an international, diverse country. The European Solidarity Corps offers a wonderful opportunity to get one step closer to this wish. Volunteers who come to us for a whole year can really "arrive", get to know the local people well, and develop relationships. These connections are irreplaceable - not only for our region.

Das "Kultur- und Initiativenhaus", so der Name unseres Vereins, befindet sich in
Greifswald, Deutschland. Wir nennen das soziokulturelle Zentrum "STRAZE" (wegen seiner
Adresse Stralsunder Straße 10). Das historische Gebäude hat eine lange
Geschichte, war aber vom Abriss bedroht, um Platz für Bürogebäude zu schaffen. Im Jahr 2008
gründete eine engagierte Gruppe von Menschen den Verein, um gegen die Pläne der Investoren zu
kämpfen und das Gebäude zu retten. Mit Erfolg!
Mehr als einem Jahrzehnt wurde die "STRAZE" in unzähligen Stunden restauriert und zu dem
soziokulturellen Zentrum umgebaut, das es heute ist.
Es ist ein Zentrum für Bildung und Kultur, ein offener Raum für die Zivilgesellschaft in Greifswald
und darüber hinaus. Unter dem Dach der STRAZE befinden sich offene Werkstätten, ein Café, eine
Bibliothek, Seminarräume, Büroräume für viele NGOs und als Herzstück der historische Saal - ein
Ort der Begegnung.

Unser Verein selbst - der "Kultur- und Initiativenhaus Greifswald e.V." - ist in verschiedenen
Bereichen der sozialen, kulturellen und Bildungsarbeit tätig.
Projekte des Vereins sind:
1. Die internationale Freiwilligendienstinitiative Turbina Pomerania:
Getragen von einem Netzwerk von Initiativen und Vereinen in Greifswald und darüber hinaus,
wurde eine grenzüberschreitende Plattform für zivilgesellschaftliches
Engagement mit vielen internationalen Partner:innen entwickelt. Freiwillige aus aller Welt haben
die Möglichkeit, in der STRAZE und bei anderen Partnerorganisationen an Freiwilligendiensten in
den Bereichen Umwelt-, entwicklungspolitischen, interkulturellen oder antirassistischen Themen zu
engagieren. Ziel der Projekte ist es, junge Menschen zu befähigen, eine eine aktive Rolle bei der
Gestaltung der lokalen Zivilgesellschaft und damit der Gesellschaft von morgen zu übernehmen.
2. Das non-formale Bildungsprojekt "verquer."
Verquer. ist ein interdisziplinäres non-formales Bildungsprojekt zu Themen des Globales Lernens.
Ein Team von rund 30 Personen und 4 Teilzeit Mitarbeiter:innen, die sich für eine globale
Perspektive und mehr Gerechtigkeit in Vorpommern engagieren, sind in dieser
Initiative aktiv. Sie engagieren sich zum Beispiel im Rahmen von Projekttagen und -wochen mit
Schulklassen und Gruppen, mit dem Radioprojekt VeRa oder bei dem Sommercamp und unseren
Jugendclubs.
3. Die "Partnerschaft für Demokratie"
Die "Partnerschaft für Demokratie Greifswald" ist eine von über 300 Partnerschaften, die im
Rahmen des Bundesprogramms "Demokratie leben!" gegründet wurden. Greifswald bewarb sich
und startete die Partnerschaft gemeinsam mit dem Kultur- und Initiativenhaus Greifswald e.V. im
Jahr 2019.
Das Kernelement einer Partnerschaft für Demokratie ist die Förderung und Stärkung einer
lebendigen, vielfältigen und offenen Demokratie durch aktive Zusammenarbeit von Politik,
Verwaltung, Organisationen, Institutionen und Zivilgesellschaft. Das
Ziel ist es, eine langfristige, lokale Partnerschaft zwischen den verschiedenen Akteuren aufzubauen,
die als Solidargemeinschaft ein sichtbares Zeichen gegen Rassismus und für Menschenrechte setzt.
4. Die [druckkammer]
Mit kulturell bedeutsamen Drucktechniken in der offenen Druckwerkstatt [druckkammer]
lernen die Teilnehmer:innen und Besucher:innen in den verschiedenen Workshops, ihre gewohnten
Sichtweisen und Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten zu durchbrechen.Die unterschiedlichen
Herangehensweisen, die von der rein manuellen bis zur digitalen Umsetzung reichen, ebnen den
Weg für eine individuelle und prägnante Form des Ausdrucks und der Verbindung mit anderen
Menschen bei Projekten wie dem Siebdruck für eine lokale Veranstaltung. Das freie
Experimentieren, sowie das Erlernen von grundlegenden Drucktechniken kann hier von Grund auf
erlebt und erlernt werden.
5. Das House of Ressources
Anfang 2021 wurde das Projekt House of Resources in Greifswald gegründet. Das Projekt House of
Ressources zielt darauf ab bürgerschaftliches Engagement zu stärken. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt
dabei auf der Unterstützung von regionalen und lokalen Migrant:innenorganisationen. Wir
unterstützen auch andere integrative Gruppen, Vereine und engagierte Einzelpersonen.
6. Die STRAZE selbst
