Petras Kriaučiūnas Public library was founded in 1921 as a budgetary institution. Since then it became socially active and open library for all social groups. The library provides wide range of activities and services for all of its patrons. The services could be separate in two groups – traditional ones and activities based on non-formal methods for all age groups.
The Library consis of central library and 24 branches (1 city branch and 23 rural area branches).
Central library consist of 4 compartments, administration and technical personnel. There are 68 regular workers at Petras Kriaučiūnas library currently.
The library’s mission is to be an important part of the community and to be able to provide a quality information services for all it‘s members, especially taking into consideration the needs of children and youth.
Main goals of the library are to form and manage library funds, to increase accessibility and usage of regional studies publications and information, to develop integral information system (LIBIS), to organize cultural events for community, promote reading and activities among children and youth, to consult and provide computer literacy courses to those in need and to offer traditional library services.
Other actvities and services. Marijampolė‘s Library is famous for its long lasting doll theatre „Trivainėlis“ (running since 1987). Library’s staff runs free shows for families inside and outside library walls, holds theatrical book readings in public areas acrross the town. The library provides family game tournaments, works with youth and adults from social exclusion groups (for example, organizes disabled artists expositions, participates as partners in the national programs for unemployed youth) offers educational sessions and activities at Multicenter (multifunctional centre for children and youth based on non-formal learning methods, promotes volunteering.
Statistics. In 2019 767 events, 365 of them for children and adolescence audience were carried at Petras Kriaučiūnas Public Library. There were 10339 registered users, 242738 visitors per year in 2019.
In 2019, 14 project applications were prepared and submitted to the institutions administering financial support - the Open Youth Activities Program administered by the Department of Youth Affairs under the Ministry of Social Security and Labor, the Lithuanian Culture Council Innovative Services Development and Equal Cultural Development Programs, the Cultural Passport Service , public health, non - governmental organizations, social inclusion and cultural programs for people with disabilities. 3 projects were not funded, 1 project application was evaluated in 2020. 10 projects were allocated funding, 2 of them will be implemented in 2020. In 2019, EUR 37955.00 was received from various support programs for the implementation of 8 projects.
