GESŠ has had a long tradition. In 2015 we celebrated the 70-year anniversary of Trbovlje Grammar School and in 2016 the 60-year anniversary of Trbovlje Business School. Since 2014/2015 a sports class has been added to the Grammar School program. We have always maintained a high quality of education and employed good teaching staff; we use updated technology, have well-equipped classrooms, including two special modern computer labs, a classroom for a class called Teaching Company, a well-settled library with a reading room and a multipurpose multimedia space for school and extra-curricular activities. Our school was one of the first schools in Slovenia to use the online classroom. The building was built in 1928, and has since been renovated several times. The school property includes a school gym, a school park close to the school, as well as a sports playground just a step from the school building. Young people are provided the skills, affiliation and attachment to the school and open-ended possibilities for a creative future. The young or the old can take part in a variety of afternoon activities designed for anyone from the neighborhood. Our goal is to become an educational institution for anyone who wants to learn more.
In this school year (2020/2021) we employ 27 teachers and 9 non-pedagogical personnel. A new addition to the education staff is a young PE teacher hired through a project called Mladi za mlade in skrbi za zdrav življenjski slog dijakov. In GESŠ we offer two educational programs which include 242 students – in the Grammar School program there are nine classes and in the Business School program there are four classes.
In addition to everything we offer students, there are also other forms of education available, such as mandatory elective activities for both programs. A part of these activities is fixed, the other part enables students to choose by themselves. These activities bring a new take on school work; they harbor creativity and allow students to partake in different projects independently. These activities are led and organized by the school’s teaching staff as well as outside contractors. They last between 15 to 30 hours and cover various areas; for example, art, culture, sports, health care, social assistance, computer science, foreign languages, science, logic, ecology, journalism, entrepreneurship, road traffic regulations, and the civil culture. Students take part in excursions in Slovenia and abroad. The bio-geographical and recreational camps in Slovenia are very appealing. Students learn about specific ecosystems and research their typical flora and fauna. They study the geographical characteristics of Slovenian mountains and try out mountaineering, and other outdoors sports and leisure activities.
Our school organizes different clubs from different subject areas; mathematical, science, relaxation and choir weekends are available, as well as preparations for competitions. By participating in international projects, such as the Scheinfeld Exchange and Euroweek, we expand knowledge and horizons, learn new cultures and introduce Trbovlje and Slovenia to European countries. The longest exchange with a foreign high school is with Scheinfeld, which has lasted since 1994 and in which over 1,200 students have taken part. 20-30 students from both schools spend a week at the partner school, attend classes there, get to know the country and its cultural and historical sights while living with local families. During Euroweek eight of our students attend a five day get-together with students from other EU countries to participate in a program for all students. Other extracurricular activities include the English debate team, where students take part in and also organize debates in which they showcase their abilities in argumentation.
Volunteering is also a major factor in our school. We organize St. Nicholas fair, bring gifts to children for New Year’s and take part in benefits from other organizations.
GESŠ is associated with various activities in the local community (The Municipality of Trbovlje, Trbovlje Museum, cultural hall, Youth center, senior citizens homes, elementary schools, Caritas, the Red Cross, VDC, Trbovlje library, sports clubs).
The school is actively involved in organizations and institutions on a local, regional and state level (The Human Rights Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia, Amnesty International, Slovene Philanthropy, National Institute for Public Health). Our pragmatic approach transcends traditional classroom bound knowledge acquisition. We continuously update pedagogical methods and introduce new teaching methods. Parents are often included in networks with certain educational content.
Municipality of Trbovlje supports the school’s various activities and occasionally joins and participates in these activities. Having an exchange of knowledge, experience, and skills with a clear educational purpose benefits all who partake in the pedagogical process.
