Kamp Westerbork was the Dutch transit camp for Jews during WWII.
It was established in 1939 as a refugee camp for Jews who fled the naziregime in Germany and Austria.
Under naziregime the main purpose was to control, concentrate and deport Jews, Roma and Sinti to concentration camps such as Auschwitz, Bergen Belsen, Theresienstadt and Sobibor.
The most notable prisoner in Westerbork was Anne Frank.
After liberation the campsite served as an interneringskamp for nazi-collaborators, and (until 1971) as a village for housing former Moluccan KNIL soldiers and their families.
Since 1983 Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork (HCKW) is a Museum and Memorial Site.
HCKW is of national and international importance in Holocaust Education, Research and Remembrance.
