The Municipal Institute of Education and Libraries of Calvià (IMEB) is a local autonomous public body of an administrative and service nature created by Calvià Council for the management of municipal powers in matters of education and libraries. The municipality of Calvià is located in the Balearic archipelago and is characterised by having a large tourist presence. The high labour demand in the sector means that young people in the municipality do not feel the need to develop specific skills and competencies to access the labour market. Furthermore, those who decide to study have difficulty finding jobs that are related to their training.
The objective of the Institute is to improve the quality of municipal education, offering support to students and their families from a young age to further education levels. The organisation directly manages social and educational projects which give special importance for the future of young people and social cohesion for the inhabitants of Calvià.
The services managed by the IMEB are as follows: pre-education schools, the reinforcement programme for pre-education and primary education students (REIP), Calvià educational reinforcement centres (CREC), municipal libraries, the education centre for adults (CEPA Calvià), scholarship programme, internship programme, extracurricular and holiday activities, open classrooms, parents' associations (AMIPA) and the University Centre of Calvià (CUC) where European programmes such as European volunteering (ESC), solidarity projects (ESC) or ERASMUS+ and ESC training through
SALTO-YOUTH are managed.
The Calvià University Centre is a municipal service that aims to promote further education among young people in the municipality. To this end, four programmes that structure the centre have been launched:
- ‘Ayuda al estudio’: aimed at offering resources that facilitate access to further education (study rooms, transport to university centres, support in enrolment, etc.).
- ‘Brújula educativa’: designed to offer individual and group guidance activities for making decisions about their academic and professional future.
- ‘Créate’: aimed at offering resources to complement training in a theoretical and practical way, encouraging the acquisition and improvement of professional and personal skills of young people.
- ‘Calvià in Europe’: aimed at offering activities and services to promote mobility and European participation among young people from Calvià through the ESC programme and European training courses; thus, generating learning opportunities beyond formal education. The objectives of this last programme are to encourage the active participation of the youth of the municipality, to promote solidarity, to offer non-formal learning opportunities and to increase autonomy, motivation, proactivity and responsibility.
In conclusion, the Calvià University Centre offers opportunities to the young people of the municipality to learn about their professional and academic interests, proposes training itineraries and complements their formal education. The actions of the European Solidarity Corps are considered to offer opportunities for young people in Calvià to learn about other situations, people, backgrounds, cultures and, especially, non-formal reasons and ways to develop skills and competences in Europe.
