Itä-Karjalan Kansanopisto (The East Karelian Adult Education College) started operating in Impilahti on the shores of Lake Ladoga in 1906. Itä-Karjalan Kansanopisto moved to Punkaharju after the Winter War in 1940. The Ministry of Education and Culture issues permits to organize education and supervises the activities.
Itä-Karjalan Kansanopisto is a modern, non-political and non-religious College of Advanced Education offering both general and vocational education. Here students are given an opportunity to develop and improve skills and abilities which will help them succeed in further studies, working life and society. As a residential school, Itä-Karjalan Kansanopisto provides a safe living environment for young people who are leaving home for the first time. With the support of staff and other students, they will learn to cope more independently in everyday situations.
Many of the courses offered are suitable for mature and senior students and people who are looking for new experiences. About 130-150 students are attending to long courses. The students have Finnish background but there are also foreign students from other countries. A personal study plan will be drown up for each student, where suitable previous studies will be counted in the student´s favour.
- This organisation holds a European Solidarity Corps Quality Label. The Quality Label certifies that the organisation is able to run projects in compliance with the principles and objectives of the European Solidarity Corps.
