The University for Foreigners of Siena has widened its range of educational activities and enlarged its student body, from students who attend the Italian language courses to students involved in Undergraduate, Graduate, Postgraduate and PhD degree programs. The University for Foreigners of Siena is a meeting point where one can encounter languages and cultures from all over the world and learn about different multicultural realities.
In addition to Italian for Foreigners, several languages are offered in the degree courses, including Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Russian, French, German, Spanish and English.
The University for Foreigners of Siena has an exceptional tradition of research. Amongst the many sectors in which it excels one finds studies on Teaching Italian as a Second/Foreign Language (Lifelong learning, Language Testing, E-learning methods and approaches), as well as Philology and Linguistics, thanks to our many different research centres: the CLUSS Centre - the Language Centre of the University, where courses of Italian Language and Culture are available for foreign students; the CILS Centre for the Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language; the DITALS Centre that certifies practical and theoretical competence in the field of teaching Italian as a foreign language; the FAST Centre for on-line activities; the CLASS Centre for Foreign Languages; the Centre of Excellence - Permanent Linguistic Observatory for Italian abroad and Immigrant Languages in Italy; the Ce.R.S.D.E.P Centre.
All courses, research activities and facilities (our audiovisual and multimedia centres, IT facilities, computer centres, linguistic and computer laboratories, and library) of the institution are located in our highly modern building located in Siena.
The University for Foreigners of Siena has adopted a quality management system in accordance with UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 and has achieved the Certification for “Projecting and providing formative activities for undergraduate and postgraduate level”.
The University has received the European Label for Languages eight times, during the period from 2004 to 2014.
This award recognizes the quality of linguistic projects designed by the University which give fresh impetus to language teaching and learning by means of innovative and effective teaching practices, raising awareness of the European cultural and linguistic heritage and motivating individuals to embrace multilingual experiences throughout their lives.
