Iberian Ecovillages Network (RIE) is among the oldest networks of ecological community projects in Europe. Currently the association has 45 members in Spain and Portugal, mostly consisting of ecovillages, intentional communities and sustainable settlements. The network also includes some green businesses and related networks. RIE has been active in the field of adulteducation for seventeen years. It has developed its own trainings, workshops and courses and has organised educational activities around the issues of ecology, permaculture, adequate technologies, community building, conflict management, collaborative leadership, gender equality, social economy and so on. Besides it has organised conferences, exhibitions and meetings on these themes on a regular base.
The functioning of RIE as an association dates of the year 2008, year in which it was founded legally as a project unifying institution. Nevertheless, the activity of many of the Ecoaldeas and sustainable communities that form a part of this association work for over 35 years with people who are ready to live a new experience during a certain period of time, and are keen on receiving formation in what, this kind of organisation can offer. Which can be defined as the integration of all the aspects of the collective living in all its different forms such as, ecological, social, cultural, educational, etc. These types of experiences are normally held in a natural landscape and in direct contact with the nature.
