C.I.G.N.O. Foundation was founded in 2011 by Association Vela onlus ( organization of cancer patients and their relatives ) with private partners, as an organization with legal personality to realize projects in collaboration not only with other non-profits associations but also with institutions. Its name is an acronym: Come Immaginare la Gestione di una Nuova Oncologia ( How to imagine the management of a new oncology). The main topics of C.I.G.N.O. are: oncology rehabilitation and psycho-social recovery (including the topic of rights) of people in distress due to the disease, psycho-oncology, palliative care, prevention and sustainability in oncology. In Italy National healthcare system covers most of cancer paths but the above mentioned topics are often not addressed. To achieve its objectives C.I.G.N.O. plans activities with social and Healthcare workers ( oncologists, psychologists , counsellors, personal trainers, dietitians, ) whose work is mostly free of charge, and volunteers of Association Vela . Every C.I.G.N.O. project analyses the economic and social impacts of any intervention. Since 2011 C.I.G.N.O.’ s motto is “QUALITY OF LIFE AS A SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC VALUE” but very recently scientific literature in oncology (Perrone et al Annals of Oncology 2016) has demonstrated that these aspects may have an impact
on survival of cancer patients and their relatives. C.I.G.N.O. Foundation is a member of the National Board of the National Federation of Volunteer Associations in Oncology and has carried out projects in collaboration with Public social and Healthcare Institutions: Local Health institution and Regional oncological network. In the past years, the Foundation has also partnered with local companies for corporate training projects aimed at promoting correct lifestyles and prevent burn out. C.I.G.N.O. has also projects in cooperation with the high schools for training courses. C.I.G.N.O. to achieve his purposes is in possession of a Quality management system which is certified against ISO 9001:2015 by Bureau Veritas and is PROVIDER for CME in Piedmont Region (Italy). Education, information and training are the basis of all interventions. The global idea is “empowerment”: of healthcare workers, patients, relatives, citizens. In recent years Italy has lost expertises in any field. C.I.G.N.O. aims to create a favorable field for skills growth.
