Society “Jelgava association of national culture unities” of Jelgava (JNKBA) was founded combining the Roma, Hebrew, Russian, Lithuanian and Polish national associations in 2004 February 5.
Ukrainian cultural centre “Džerelo” joined to the JNKBA in 2005 and Belarusian society of Jelgava “Ļanok” in 2006.
The aim of the JNKBA:
• Create favorable conditions for national minorities who is living in Jelgava;
• The requirements and needs of autonomy;
• Improvement of inter-ethnic relations;
• Create civil and integrates society in the Republic of Latvia.
There are 7 national cultural associations in JNKBA:
1. Russian society of Jelgava “Istok”;
2. The Union of Poles in Jelgava;
3. Lithuanian society of Jelgava “Vītis”;
4. Roma society of Jelgava city and district “Romanu čačipen”;
5. Jewish society of Jelgava;
6. Ukrainian cultural centre of Jelgava “Džerelo”;
7. Belarusian society of Jelgava “Ļanok”.
JNKBA also actively involved in the non-governmental sector. They organize different meetings and informational activities for non-governmental sector. The aim of these activities is to build the capacity of local non-governmental organizations and to promote cooperation with other closest non-governmental organizations and local governments and public institutions of Jelgava.
JNKBA main activities:
• Minority cultural days in Jelgava;
• Arrangement of anniversary of the Republic of Latvia “Caur trejdeviņiem gaismas lokiem...”;
• Participating in city day of Jelgava;
• The national holiday celebration;
• Participation in activities that promote civil and integrated society;
• Language training – Polish, Lithuanian and Ukrainian clubs;
• Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Belorussian, Hebrew, Romany cultural days in Jelgava;
• Development and implementation of several project that linked with society integration
JNKBA with their activities can attract more new leads who do not care their age, ethnicity and social restrictions not only form Jelgava but also from other surrounding teritory like Zemgale region and Latvia at all. In recent years the JNKBA also has been involved in different activities which are related to the integration of young people in society.
Attracting more young people they in long term become active members of society which help not only to develop national minorities in the cultural association of Jelgava but society as a whole.
Inclusion topics
This organisation is willing to involve volunteers who face situations which make their participation in activities more difficult, from the following categories for different types of project:
- Economic obstacles
- Geographical obstacles
- Social obstacles
- This organisation holds a European Solidarity Corps Quality Label. The Quality Label certifies that the organisation is able to run projects in compliance with the principles and objectives of the European Solidarity Corps.
