Legambiente Lecco Onlus was originally born in 1978 as an Environmental Defense Committee and joined a part of Legambiente in 1988, a non-profit environmental association that has over 370 local clubs, 20 regional committees and about 115,000 members. Legambiente sets its activity on solid scientific foundations which have guaranteed authority and credibility over time also by the institutions both at local and national level. Legambiente Onlus is also an association recognized by the Ministry of the Environment as an Environmental Interest Association; it is part of the European Environment Bureau (B.E.E.) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Finally, since 1997 it has been a member of the Alliance of European Voluntary Service Organizations, an international NGO organization that groups together the major European associations that intend to promote intercultural, integrated education and rhythm through volunteering. The group's main commitment is to work to still maintain sustainable life in balance with the environment, of which man is an integrated part.

In 2013, the group decided to embark on a new adventure with the Monte Barro Park Hostel, a semi-abandoned structure inserted within the Hermitage of the Monte Barro Regional Park (LC).
In addition to the management of the hostel, among the activities carried out by Legambiente Lecco we can mention:
• safeguarding the biodiversity of ecosystems, in particular the pre-Alpine one; campaigns to protect endangered animal species (Bufo bufo);
• development and growth of the territory in waste management in accordance with European legislation (in particular on the reduction of packaging, the abolition of plastic in the United States and the availability of compostable products and the growth of separate collection);
• monitoring and collaboration with institutions relating to the safeguarding of lake shores and water quality; development of campaigns also related to air quality;
• promotion of legality and fighting (in network with other local associations) what are called eco-mafias;
• development of planning for the fight against waste, above all of a food nature (projects "I creativi della garbage", "SprecoZero" and "Mercato dello Sprecato");
• proposal of cultural events and training courses centered on the multifaceted theme of sustainability (FestAmbiente Monte Barro, University of Spontaneous Herbs);
• promotion of sustainable tourism activities and discovery of the territory through the involvement of local witnesses and young people for intergenerational learning (Eco Urban Walk);

To this are added the activities developed by the operators of Legambiente Lecco:
• coordination and organization of short and long term volunteering projects (international volunteering camps, youth exchanges, Civil Service);
• development of European projects linked to membership issues;
• environmental education in schools (primary, secondary of first degree, secondary of second degree) and realization of summer stays of environmental education for children between 8 and 13 years;
• organization of formal meetings, excursions and debates aimed at "environmentally training" citizens;
• organization of mobilization days, awareness campaigns and dissemination events;
• management and conservation of natural areas, protected oases and areas of landscape and environmental interest.
