The Municipal Public Library in Kielce was established in 2002 and entered into the Register of Cultural Institutions. Within several years, the organizational structure of the Library was modified. The Automation and Information Technology Department and the Collection, Development and Access Department were created. The branch network has also been modified. Currently, the library network consists of 12 branches. MBP in Kielce is open to readers of the voivodship city, and from other nearby towns, who by registering in the system become library readers. At present 21,000 readers are registered. Each year of library activity is an increase in new readers and readership. The library's collection includes over 325,000 items, including nearly 900 volumes in the "e-book" version. The library also uses specialized devices for people with visual impairments. In one of the branches the "Language Library" has been opened, which contains books and magazines from around the world. There are positions in German, English, Spanish, Russian and Ukrainian. It is also a place where foreign-language readers can meet their compatriots and get acquainted with Polish literature. The Municipal Public Library in Kielce is completely automated, each branch has internet access. Ongoing activity focuses on providing access to written culture, popularizing literature, reading and Polish language. Periodic promotional campaigns readership are targeted at various age groups tailored to specific needs. These include meetings with authors and writers, linguists, literary competitions and language dictations. There are also supporting and integrating activities such as the 'Kid's Club' campaign. Cyclical meetings with the youngest readers of primary and high school schools as well as students. Meetings with the 'Senior Club'. Successfully organized 'bookcrossing' actions, i.e. points with books where readers can download literary items free of charge from 12 mobile bookshelves and in exchange transfer your publication to the readership circulation. The program "Books on the phone" is also implemented. The campaign of reading books for children in departments of the Children's Hospital in Kielce is being carried out. A program of assistance through bibliotherapy was also implemented. Currently (in 2020), MBP is in the process of opening the 'Mediateka' in the Communication Center of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodship. The planned media library will include modern computer workstations and presentation equipment in the virtual reality VR format.
We have extensive experience in organizing charity and social events related to volunteering, including collections, auctions, reading books for children and others (also described below). In March 2020, we opened the first branch of the library as a language branch. We want to promote literature from many countries, multilingualism, understanding for other cultures and European values.
The Municipal Public Library in Kielce conducts joint actions with the Senior Club in Kielce, elementary schools, general high schools and technical schools, Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce, literary associations, creative associations, and cultural units of the City of Kielce. It meets the expectations of children and young people and cooperates with local associations. At the turn of March 2020, an attempt was also made to establish cooperation with the National Library of Lithuania in Vilnius.
As part of the EKS project At the Municipal Public Library, a volunteer:
1. It introduces its country and the European Union, the idea of integration, living in peace during classes for children (classes organized among primary school students in the resources of a language library branch, which at the same time familiarizes children with reading and shows what an adventure it is).
2. He conducts language talks (based on books and magazines in the language library).
3. He prepares exhibitions presenting interesting facts from his country
4. Supports the clean-up work of librarians (takes care of order on shelves with a foreign-language books collection, arranges book collection, preserves books).
5. Actively helps in the organization of cultural events, educational activities and reading animations.
6. Helps to prepare library promotional materials.
7. Promotes library activities in the local environment (e.g. by distributing invitations, posters and leaflets, for example, in dorms and cooperating institutions).
8. He runs tutoring and compensatory classes for children. Helps them with their homework.
9. Helps to translate language texts.
10. It helps to keep photographic documentation of library activities.
11. Organizes and maintains interest circles in his own country in groups of children and seniors.
12. He cooperates in running the Book Discussion Club.
13. Assists in borrowing books in foreign languages (help in choosing literature, suggestions for readers).
14. Assists in the work and projects of media publication in VR reality formations. All these activities are consistent with the objectives of EKS, as part of their work the volunteer will awake a sense of responsibility for others and readiness to sacrifice for the common good both for himself and the recipients of his activities. Thanks to the work of volunteers from abroad, the library will become a more open place - in solidarity with the local community. According to the assumptions of the program, volunteer activities respond to important social needs, contribute to strengthening the community - we described the above described together with the library employees and recipients of our activities. At the same time, we will enable volunteers to gain practical experience, skills and competences necessary to acquire new knowledge, personal, social, civic and professional development.
