The Municipal Museum of the Kalavritan Holocaust was founded in 1986. It is a Legal Entity under Public Law and is housed in the historic Primary School of Kalavryta, a classic example of school architecture of the early twentieth century, which has been designated as a historic monument.
The purpose of the Museum is the collection, documentation, preservation, exhibition and interpretation of all kinds of museological material related to the dramatic events of the Kalavritan Holocaust of December 13, 1943.
The Kalavrita Holocaust is characterized by the mass execution of the entire male population of Kalavryta by the German Occupation Forces on 13/12/1943, the simultaneous hostage-taking of women and children at the Primary School of Kalavryta, the looting and burning of houses in the city. However, the Holocaust of Kalavryta is defined by other mass executions and destructions, which took place -in the same or similar way- in villages of the province of Kalavryta.
The aims of the Museum also include the promotion of education and research by organizing periodic exhibitions, educational programs, lectures and historical conferences, publications and publications, on issues related to the subject of the legal entity. The museum exhibits more than 500 artifacts, and on its archives preserves more than 3000 photographs, historical documents, 70 paintings, 150 artifacts and more than 2500 books, all about the period 1920-1945.
Characteristically, we mention the art exhibition on the subject of the Holocaust (every December) and the organization of a two-day conference on ICOM in the context of the celebration of the International Museum Day on May 18, every year.
Finally, the Museum seeks and collaborates with researchers for the elaboration of works, with Museums of the country and abroad, with local bodies and associations and the local community.
