KANNABIO cooperative, is a vertically-integrated (farm-to-fork), social enterprise established in 2016 that produces organic raw material, functional food and functional cosmetics. KANNABIO, based in Volos, Greece, has as a statutory mission to explore the full potential of the hemp plant and promote its uses that contribute towards sustainability, employability and circularity. It is a triple impact company that strives for social equity, environmental sustainability and economic viability, with a vision is to create a fully sustainable, regenerative farm in Volos. KANNABIO has managed since 2016, the cultivation of more than 75 hectares of organic land for producing organic hemp raw material. Based on the acreage cultivated each year, it is estimated that for the past six years the coop has sequestered/ stored more than 1,400 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, contributing substantially to climate change mitigation. Currently, a multidisciplinary team is managing the development of a prototype organic polyculture, peri-urban farm with the aim of regenerating the agricultural eco-system and the social fabric of the area. The demonstration farm will serve as a sustainability and resilience training hub, with the aim to connect international youth (especially unemployed, youth workers and youth with lower income) and engage them in skill-building activities that will empower them for enhancing their professional capabilities to initiate their own projects and/or businesses.
