Beskrivelse av organisasjon

Turtle Island’s mission is to save turtles & tortoises from extinction through acute rescue, care, research, breeding, and rewilding. Turtle Island, managed by the internationally renowned scientist & zoologist Peter Praschag, breeds and focuses on conservation of endangered turtles worldwide. With over 240 taxa and more than 2500 turtles housed at four locations across Styria, Austria, two of which are Category A Zoos, Turtle Island is an Ark for endangered species, scientifically recognized and the most important or species-rich institution worldwide.

Our central concern is the furthering of the idea of nature conservation, the creation of a heightened awareness of nature and the environment among the general population, as well as the active participation in or implementation of nature and species conservation projects. We are particularly interested in educational work for young people in order to sensitize them to species conservation and sustainability.

We are
+ a recognized scientific institution, research facility, and zoo, focusing on the conservation and breeding of the world’s most endangered and overlooked turtle species.
+ a CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) certified institution
+ Austria’s only official shelter and sanctuary for confiscated or unwanted turtles.

Our main goal is to achieve public awareness advocates and educators for species conservation and to get their financial long-term support.
