The main aim of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Centre (WEC) formerly known as Seal Centre Pieterburen (Zeehondencentrum Pieterburen) is to promote nature conservation and awareness of the Wadden Sea ecosystem. The seal serves as a central symbol, representing the region and acting as an ambassador for environmental education. The centre seeks to combine nature, science, education, and visitor experience in one sustainable, interactive hub. Main Activities: -Seal Care and Rehabilitation – Continuing the legacy of the Seal Centre Pieterburen, the WEC operates a seal hospital using decades of experience in rescuing and rehabilitating seals. -Education and Public Engagement – Visitors can explore the Wadden Sea through interactive exhibits, outdoor experiences, and excursions, learning about the region’s unique ecosystem. -Research and Science – Ecologists, biologists, veterinarians, and students conduct ongoing studies at the WEC to better understand the Wadden Sea, combining hands-on research with public education. Target Groups: -General public and tourists interested in nature and the Wadden Sea. -Students and researchers in ecology, biology, and veterinary sciences. -Environmental advocates and conservation enthusiasts seeking educational and experiential engagement
