DiscoverEU Meet up, Turku
Registration form is closed. The Meet up is full.
Let’s make Turku the capital again?
Turku is the oldest city in Finland, famous for having burnt down not only once, but many times, for example in the Great Fire of Turku in 1827, still the largest urban fire of the history of all Nordic countries. More recently this charming city has also gained reputation for being “the Paris of Finland”.
This lively student city next to a huge archipelago was also the capital of the country for three years in the beginning of the 19th century. Finland was not even an independent country yet but so what; it is still common to hear locals joking about making Turku the capital again. Should we? Come experience it and tell us what you think! 😉
Participants to the Meet up are accommodated for three nights in mixed dormitories at a local museum ship hostel S/S Bore on the Aura River. Three breakfasts, two lunches and three dinners are also included, as well as all the activities and a two-days ticket for public transportation in Turku.
You just need to take care of your personal insurance coverages and travelling to this stunning city, but the latter is quite easy, as it is one of the biggest and most central cities of the country: you can take a two-hour train from Helsinki, or a direct ferry from Stockholm.
The program for the Meet up in Turku takes places from Wednesday evening 14th to Saturday morning 17th of August. It promotes nonformal and informal learning and includes:
- Exploring the city
- Visiting the Cloister Hill open-air museum (“Luostarinmäki”), the largest area to survive the Great Fire of Turku, and the medieval Turku Castle
- Experiencing an authentic Finnish sauna
- Familiarizing with the Finnish culture and cuisine
- Getting to know new friends from across Europe
There is room for a maximum of 16 participants. The event is aimed for those travelling with their DiscoverEU pass on the time of the Meet up, or if you are a former DiscoverEU traveler and now a DiscoverEU ambassador from Finland.
Participants will be selected based on the order of registrations, and everyone who signed up will be informed on the results latest in June. Detailed program will be sent to the selected participants.
Please let us know through the registration form if you have any special needs that should be considered. The Meet up follows the so-called safer space principles; aiming to create a space free of discrimination, harassment, and bullying.
The Meet up is organized by a Finnish non-governmental organization Youth Academy in co-operation with the Finnish National Agency for Education (Opetushallitus). Welcome to #DiscoverTurku with us!
