Best hiking routes in Europe

Are you ready to find your hiking boots, pack a sustainable water bottle, and embark on an adventure that promises breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences? Europe offers a variety of landscapes, from rolling countryside hills to towering mountains. It's an ideal destination for those who want to explore while being environmentally conscious.

Getting started

  • Hiking is fun, but before starting, make sure to:
  • Research about the hiking route and the terrain
  • Choose good hiking shoes
  • Get a waterproof jacket (if it’s raining period)
  • Pick a suitable rucksack, and make sure it’s filled with the essentials.
  • Wear lightweight layers

Are you ready? Below you can find 5 famous hiking routes in Europe waiting for you to explore!

Saxer Lücke (Switzerland)

First on the list is Saxer Lücke. This hike is part of the Alpstein mountain range. If you are a beginner hiker, then you just found the perfect hike! It’s quite an easy, well-maintained trail with some stairs along the way, but the path is quite rocky, so be cautious where you put your feet. 

The distance of the hike is 6 KM, and it’s elevated by around 300 meters. Make sure you don’t forget to bring with you water, snacks, a jacket and your camera, to capture the unforgettable terrain!

Landmannalaugar ( Iceland)

If you’re more of an adventurous type of hiker, then Landmannalaugar is the place! Landmannalaugar in Iceland is only accessible in summer by a 4-wheel drive vehicle or a bus from Reykjavík. It is mainly due to harsh winter weather conditions. 

Once you arrive, you can start your journey by doing a full-day return hike, which is approximately 24 KM. Along this route, you will be amazed by the stunning views. 

Landmannalaugar is also renowned for its hot springs located right at the campsite, which is ideal for a relaxing post-hike soak.

Jetřichovice (Czech Republic)

The Jetřichovice loop trail is located near Jetřichovice, Ústí Nad Labem. It’s a moderate yet challenging hiking route. The 9 KM loop will take you 3 hours to complete. The loop trail is also a well-known area for bird watching and hiking, so you will most probably find other people while exploring this path. 

The route is varied when it comes to the terrain. You will walk on a plain path for a while, and afterwards expect the rocky terrain. The most rewarding part of it all is the spectacular panoramic view from the hills.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo Hiking Trail (Italy)

Tre Cime di Lavaredo is one of Europe's most infamous hiking trails. Located within the Cime National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in South Tyrol, the trail spans 10km and reaches an elevation of 340 metres above sea level. 

The route is a loop and is considered moderately challenging, despite two short, steep ascents. Hikers can expect to complete the trail in approximately four hours. It is highly recommended to begin early in the morning, not only to witness a stunning sunrise over the mountains but also to avoid the crowds.

Mūšos Tyrelis(Lithuania)

Finally, the Mūšos Tyrelis swamp is known for its impressive 6.7km boardwalk hike, which holds the title of the longest boardwalk trail in Lithuania, earning it a place in the Lithuanian Book of Records. 

Located within the Mūšos Tyrelis Telmatological Reserve, the trail offers walkers the opportunity to pass by a restored chapel dedicated to a monk. Also, a Fun fact, this trail was featured in a National Geographic issue focusing on Lithuania. So if you’re into secluded hikes surrounded by nature, this is certainly the dream hike for you!
