2021 European Year of Rail

A variety of activities will put rail in the spotlight across the continent.

In 2021 it is time to re-discover means of travelling: the EU dedicates this year to commemorate travelling by rail. The European Year of Rail will highlight this sustainable, smart and safe means of transport. 

Travelling by rail is one of the most sustainable choices yet greatly underused with only about 7% of passengers and 11% of goods. Nonetheless, rail is responsible for less than 0.5% of transport-related greenhouse gas emissions. This is why it needs a boost to contribute to achieve the goals set in the European Green Deal.
