Volunteering at Waldorf School of Pécs, Hungary

Description

Mandulafa Waldorf school is a small primary school with about 150 children in eight classes. The school building is situated in a valley in the outskirts of the city, with lots of nature around, and a good opportunity to explore the nearby hills and forests. Waldorf is a well-known system of alternative education, characterised by the love of nature and arts, a cooperative rather than competitive atmosphere, educational focus on the individual child in a supporting community, balanced development of intellectual, emotional and physical capacities. Children in the school learn two foreign languages: English and Spanish. The volunteers presence encourages the pupils to practice their English and Spanish in different everyday situations, as well as to get experience with people from other cultures. The main task is to be part of the school's everyday life, take part in language and some other classes, excursions, afternoon activities, festivals and talking and playing with the children.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

- Accomodation: a private room with bathroom at the lead organization's residence (LIONS House) - Pocket money of 180 € /month - Food allowance of 60000 HUF (about 150 €)/month - Monthly pass for public transport - One-time travel cost from the volunteer’s hometown to Pécs (Hungary) and back - The school will provide lunch on weekdays

Training during the activity

The ESC mobility includes 2 trainings: - On-arrival training at Budapest - Mid-term training at Visegrád (in a picturesque setting at the Danube bend)

Participant profile

If you • speak fluent English and/or Spanish, • have an open, tolerant personality and a good sense of humour, • like working with children, and possibly have some experience in it, • enjoy hiking in nature, gardening, • are good at DIY activities, • are interested in spending 6 months in a picturesque and vivid university town with rich history and a Mediterranean atmosphere, we’ll be happy to have you around. Former Waldorf students are most welcome, but it is not a requirement.
