The power of together

Volunteering in a Kindergarten

Internationale Jugendgemeinschaftsdienste Landesverein Berlin e.V.

Berlin, Germany

Description

Located in the vibrant neighborhood of Kreuzberg, the childcare center Nestwärme opens its doors to 70 young children aged between 1 to 7 years. Operating from Monday to Friday, 7:45 AM to 5:00 PM, this Kita is a nurturing space where children are divided into three mixed-age groups, promoting a strong sense of community. It's a place that prides itself on inclusivity, welcoming children and families from diverse backgrounds and supporting those affected by disabilities, illnesses, addiction, and social exclusion. The curriculum is rich with activities, including music, theater all designed to foster creativity and learning. The volunteers can specifically bring in their own experiences and support in creative tasks according to their own abilities. The role of a volunteer in the Kindergarten has a learning and supporting character. He or she supports the educators of one of the two groups and is fully integrated into the daily life of the Kindergarten.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The project is part of a bigger project coordinated by the German volunteering organisation "ijgd" with all together 18-20 volunteers in different social projects in Berlin. The European volunteers live in different shared flats together (everyone has an own room, kitchen and bathroom will be shared). So there is a group of European Volunteers in different social projects. It also includes the travel budget to and from Berlin, free public transport in Berlin and Brandenburg, language course.

Training during the activity

The training during the voluntary service includes 2 ESC seminars (organised by the German National Agency), meetings with the fellow volunteers, workshops, etc. and a Kick-Off Seminar (one week) with ijgd to get to know the volunteer group, ijgd and life in Berlin.

Participant profile

The participant takes responsibility in the daily play and interaction with the children. The volunteer spends the day in the group and is given his or her own tasks or can decide how to contribute to the team: preparing breakfast, accompanying the children's free play, selecting and performing finger plays or songs, accompanying the outings and walks and participates in the daily meals, accompanying regular activities such as baking or handcrafts realising his or her own ideas, e.g. working with wood with some of the children, felting, weaving, sewing, baking or painting
