ornithologist volunteering

Associació Institut Català d'ornitologia

Fogars de Montclús, Espanha

Descrição

The activity is divided in different projects with different timetables and seasonality. Most activities are fieldwork based; monitoring species through transects, listening stations, territory checks and scientific bird ringing, mainly to study their breeding biology, migration, relation with humans, diet and effects from climate change (mainly with birds, but also with other fauna). However, to do that, you will also have to do some physical work like climbing mountains often, building nest boxes and gardening so we are looking for volunteers willing to work outdoors in harsh conditions. There's also communication tasks that involve helping in courses, giving talks on events and creating social media content. Each project has a leader that is in charge of the coordination, data entry, writing a report and giving a presentation about that project. Finally, also maintenance tasks on house and garden and welcoming guests. For more information, contact carles.dura@ornitologia.org

Comparticipação nas despesas de alojamento, alimentação e transporte

Volunteers are hosted at Montseny Bird Station, which has two buildings. Most of the stay is in Fontmartina, a mountain house with 3 showers, 2 toilets, shared kitchen, dining and living rooms, 2 shared bedrooms and basic furniture. WiFi is free but weak. The area is remote, surrounded by forest, 25 minutes by car from Sant Celoni. Public transport is limited, but a shared car is available. We usually shop and cook together. The house faces typical mountain issues such as cold weather, power cuts during storms and occasional winter hot water shortages. The building is shared with other people.

Formação durante a atividade

The work of the volunteer has as their final objective their training as professionals linked to nature and the environment, learning about monitoring and management techniques, as well as other basic skills needed in a natural, forested and rural environment. At the beginning we will give classes on bird's biology, how to identify birds by sight and call, how to do census and how to take samples. Part of the activities will be demonstrative, such as workshops and field trips with other environmental management organisations. The stay includes 2 formations elsewhere. Perfil do participante

We are looking for a motivated and proactive volunteer with a genuine interest in the natural world. A scientific or environmental background is a plus, but we also welcome enthusiastic young candidates who are eager to learn about the environment. Our ideal candidate is a collaborative team player who can maintain a positive work environment both in the field and while sharing a house, is physically fit and comfortable working in steep mountain terrain, and is flexible about schedules and tasks. They should be willing to learn from others but also to share their own knowledge. No previous bird identification skills are required, though that is a plus. Experience with GIS and R, as well as strong communication or social media outreach skills, are highly valued. Applicants must be from an EU country.
