GrassROOTS: Supporting grassroots organizations with Media and Graphic Design
Roots
Antwerpen, Belgium
Description
Roots is committed to making civil society accessible to everyone. We want all young people – regardless of origin, socio-economic background or beliefs – to have access to youth and cultural activities and to feel that they are part of society. As an umbrella organisation, Roots supports around 50 grassroots youth organisations in Flanders and Brussels with training, coaching, activities and networking events. More information: https://www.roots-vlaanderen.be/ With this project, the volunteer will join our small but dynamic team and help us strengthen grassroots organisations through media and graphic design. Many of our member organisations do amazing work in their neighbourhoods but lack time, skills or tools to communicate their story in a professional way. The volunteer will help make their impact visible.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangements
The volunteer will be hosted in a studio with its own bathroom, toilet, sleeping area, living area and kitchen area. The accomodation has free wifi and furniture. The studio is not shared and for 1 volunteer. The volunteer receives a budget for food (around €300) and pocket money in accordance with the subsidy program. Volunteers receive a bicycle for daily transportation. The travel to and from host orgnization is based on the travel distance band in accordance with the programme guide of 2024.
Training during the activity
A pre-departure training in their home country organized by the sending organization. An on-arrival training and mid-term training organized by the national agency (Jint). The volunteer starts with job shadowing within Roots during the first few weeks and will continue to receive support from colleagues thereafter. The volunteer will receive a training upon its arrival during the first days. Additionally, there is an opportunity to participate in local training sessions on youth work and podcasting organized by Roots and our partners. A language course to learn Flemish....
Participant profile
The volunteer should be able to speak Dutch or be willing to learn Dutch. They should also be able to communicate fluently in English. Diversity is a core aspect of Roots, so it is important that the volunteer feels comfortable working in a diverse, multicultural environment. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, proactive and able to work independently. Roots operates with a self-managing team where each colleague has the freedom, within the framework of our policy plans, to support member organisations. Therefore, being self-reliant and taking initiative is essential. Experience in youth work is a plus. Because this project focuses on media and graphic design, we are especially interested in volunteers who: – enjoy working with visual communication (social media, flyers, posters, photos, video, etc.); – have basic skills in graphic design tools (for example Canva or similar programmes), or are strongly motivated to learn; – are interested in taking photos or filming short videos and possibly doing simple video editing. You do not need to be a professional designer, but you should be creative, curious and willing to experiment with new ideas and formats.
