Women Empowerment in Ghana

Mondo NGO and Kongo Community Development Association (KOCDA)

Kongo Village, Ghana

Beschreibung der Tätigkeit

Mondo and its partner in Ghana, Kongo Community Development Association have been supporting women collectives for about a decade now. The collectives are widows and single mothers who have been trained and are highly skilled in making shea butter products and weaving the famous colourful "Bolgatanga" baskets. Over the years, through the support of Mondo, they have created links with partners in Europe and North America - shipping their fairtrade products. We are looking for a volunteer to help them scale their business and support them in creating seamless processes to make their activities more environmentally ethical and develop some new products. The volunteers daily activities will be engaging with both the shea butter and basket weaving group to understand their activities.

Beitrag zu Unterbringung, Verpflegung und Reisekosten

The volunteer will be hosted at the guest house, with titled lockable rooms, toilet, shower, and ceiling fans. There is running water and electricity and a kitchen with a refrigerator. The guest house is 5 minutes’ walk from the village centre and the ICT centre of KoCDA 7 minutes away. Mobile phone and internet service is reliable. Regular local buses travel to the region's capital, Bolgatanga (30-min drive). There is a market square at Kongo and small kiosks also open daily. The volunteer will receive a monthly allowance of 390 euros to cover basic needs and local transport.

Fortbildung im Rahmen der Tätigkeit

The volunteer will have 2 mentors, a local mentor and one from Mondo to guide them in their work and settling into the local context. In addition to this, the volunteer will have local language lessons and in their day to day will develop their project management skills and interaction with people in vulnerable situations.
